28th July 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened higher on Tuesday, defying a sharp regional sell-off triggered by reports that a Shanghai state-backed enterprise has commenced production of domestically developed immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines.
At 9.20am, the Hang Seng Index was up 64 points at 25,271. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 0.4 per cent to 8,396, while the Hang Seng Tech Index advanced 0.6 per cent to 4,731.
The positive start in Hong Kong contrasted with steep losses elsewhere in Asia. Japanese and South Korean markets came under heavy pressure after overseas media cited sources as saying that a company with a state-owned background in Shanghai had begun manufacturing home-grown immersion DUV lithography systems. The development weighed heavily on semiconductor-related shares, with South Korea's KOSPI index plunging more than 7 per cent. Chipmaker SK Hynix was reported to have fallen by around 10 per cent in early trading.
Investors appeared concerned that progress in China's domestic chipmaking equipment capabilities could intensify competition and reshape the regional semiconductor landscape, prompting a broad sell-off in technology counters in Tokyo and Seoul.
In Hong Kong, however, sentiment remained comparatively resilient at the open. Separately, Unisound Group announced that it had completed a comprehensive upgrade of its U2-ASR and U2-TTS large speech models, enhancing multilingual and multimodal capabilities as part of its global expansion strategy.
